BRIDGETOWN, NS - Welcome to 2019! It seems that Annapolis Valley’s New Year’s Eve started well before the 31st and continued the week after. Impaired drivers and intoxicated persons of all sorts and sizes were the calls of the week. There were women fighting, a guy driving in the ditch, and the guy who just couldn’t keep his mouth shut when he was stopped after a report of erratic driving.
Dec. 29, 2018
CENTRELEA – Police responded to motor vehicle accident. An SUV was upside down in the ditch. The driver stated he lost control due to slippery road conditions. Turns out the vehicle was neither insured nor registered. While the driver was adamant he had an international driver’s license, the officer countered with “Well, you don’t have international insurance!” A $1,272.50 fine was issued for driving a motor vehicle without motor vehicle liability policy.
EAST TORBROOK – A caller reported hearing a collision in front of her home. RCMP located a male about a kilometre from the scene. While the male denied driving the vehicle, it was indeed a coincidence he works for the company that owns the vehicle. He was arrested for intoxication in a public place and lodged in cells.

MIDDLETON – A disturbance between two females was reported. The officers spoke to two females who accused each other of taking the last bit of alcohol – fightin’ words indeed. The officers advised both intoxicated parties that they both finished in last place this time round and it was time to go home – or…

WEST INGLISVILLE – A caller reported that his former tenant stole a microwave, television, and log splitter when they moved out. The RCMP contacted the former tenant who stated the items were given to them and he bought the splitter for $100. Apparently, the landlord didn’t know he gave them belated Christmas presents!
MIDDLETON – A caller complained about an intoxicated male banging at the door. Officers made a patrol and ended up arresting the male for public intoxication. He rang in the New Year in RCMP cells.
BEAR RIVER – A structure fire was reported at a local business. The scene was held until the fire marshal could investigate in the morning. RCMP are requesting any members of the public having information on the fire, to contact Annapolis District RCMP.

MIDDLETON – While on patrol at 7 a.m. RCMP officers noted a vehicle driving, as one does on New Year’s day, in the ditch near Exit 18 on Highway 101. The RCMP officers approached the driver who advised “You got me.” “Yes, what might you think gave you away?” The driver was arrested for impaired and failed his breath test.

MIDDLETON – A break-and-enter into a business was reported. $300 of scrap metal was taken. Video footage was obtained and it appears the suspect took his time and may have thought the scrap metal was garbage left outside. If anyone has any information on this incident, please contact the Annapolis District RCMP.
BRIDGETOWN – A hit-and-run in a parking lot was reported. Multiple witnesses reported that an elderly female hit the caller’s vehicle multiple times before leaving the parking lot. A plate number was obtained and the owner identified. The investigation is ongoing.
BRIDGETOWN – Police received reports of shoplifting at the NSLC. The male was identified as tall, wearing a hat, and carrying a blue bag. Video footage was obtained and the investigation remains open. RCMP are requesting anyone with information on the subject’s identify to please contact the RCMP.
WILMOT – Police received a report from a caller who said a two-door red Dodge Neon driving east on Highway 1 hit the rear of her vehicle then took off. Another call was received shortly after, that the same vehicle was passing several cars then stopped to do donuts in the church parking lot… grow up please. The vehicle was located in Kingston, abandoned and on fire. RCMP are requesting the public with any information on who the driver may be, to contact the RCMP.
WALDECK – Police received a report of a motor vehicle collision where the vehicle hit the guard rail. It was not this driver’s day because when officers arrived, he was arrested for possession of Xanax and marijuana -- which may explain the hitting the guard rail part.

MIDDLETON – A caller reported that sometime over night while she was asleep, suspects forced entry into her home and took $650 from her purse. The investigation remains open.
UPPER GRANVILLE – A family dispute allegedly results in one brother shooting at another through a door. When RCMP arrived, a shot was fired in the officer’s direction. A suspect was subsequently arrested and faces numerous charges. It’s very fortunate that there were no injuries to the victim nor to the responding officers.

MIDDLETON – A caller reported that two males came out of the NSLC and apparently just couldn’t wait to have that drink, pouring their beer into red cups as they were walking out. The males then got into a blue truck towing a trailer. Several patrols were made but vehicle not located – this time.
MIDDLETON – Reports of a blue/grey older Chev Impala tailgating the complainant before passing the on a double solid line. RCMP officers located the vehicle and determined the driver was impaired – aggravated by the fact that two kids were also in the car. The driver refused to provide samples for the road side screening. The driver then became agitated and a physical altercation followed with the police officers having threats on made on their lives and families. The driver was charged with nine Criminal Code offences and will be appearing in court in February.
