NEW MINAS - Commercial Street in New Minas is in line for some major upgrades.

The Five Year Highway Improvement Plan released by the provincial government recently lists the 7.2-kilometre section of Highway 1 spanning from the Town of Kentville to the Greenwich Connector as an asphalt-repaving project for the 2018-19 construction season.

Kings South MLA Keith Irving issued a press release Dec. 19 to commend the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for ensuring the well-travelled thoroughfare is on the to-do list.

“I know that the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure faces many pressures for road improvements and I appreciate that their planning recognizes the importance of repaving Commercial Street, both for the safety of thousands of individuals that travel the road every day, and for our local economy,” said Irving, a Liberal MLA, in a prepared statement.

Jim Winsor, a County of Kings councillor representing New Minas, has been pushing for improvements to Commercial Street for many years.

“This is a worthy investment that will benefit all of the region and enhances New Minas as the ‘Shopping Centre of the Valley,’” said Winsor in a quote circulated in Irving’s press release.

In an attempt to minimize the disruption to businesses lining Commercial Street, the construction phase will include night-time work.
