Eight swimmers with the Greenwood Dolphins Swim Club travelled to Halifax to compete in the 2019 Swim Nova Scotia Ken Dunn Provincial Championships, held at Dalplex Pool.
Oliver Cadrain, Bailey Dowell, Callie Dowell, Brandon Puttick, Grace Smith, Logan Way, Josh Wootten and Kaleigh Whitelaw all represented the club throughout the four-day competition, held July 4-7.
“Everyone had a very successful meet and it was a great way to wrap up the season,” said Dolphins’ head coach Chris Stone.
“This meet is routinely a strong meet with the best competition from Atlantic Canada along with clubs from Quebec, Ontario and New England frequently attending, so it was great to see everyone stepping up and swimming fast,” Stone added.
Leading the way was 20-year-old Logan Way, home from his second season with the Acadia Axemen Swim Team. Way was the bronze medalist in the 50m backstroke in the men’s over-16 age category, setting a new club record with his time of 29.34. Way also set a new club record in the 100m backstroke event with a time of 1:03.57, where he finished fifth.
New club records were also set by 14-year-old Puttick in the men’s 13-14 age category for the 800m and 1500m events, with times of 10:33.26 and 19:40.82 respectively. As well, 14-year-old Whitelaw set new club records for the women 13-14-year-old age category in the 400m freestyle with a time of 5:03.40 and in the 800m freestyle, with a time of 10:38.30. Sixteen-year-old Callie Dowell set a new club record for the women’s 15-17 age group in the 100m backstroke with her time of 1:17.00.
Additionally, two new relay club records were set by the Dolphins, with the women’s 4x 100m freestyle relay team of Callie Dowell, Bailey Dowell, Smith and Whitelaw, lowering the mark to 4:21.32 in the open women’s category, while the men’s 4x 200m freestyle relay team of Way, Cadrain, Wootten and Puttick lowered the open men’s mark to 8:58.94.
