BLACK ROCK, N.S. — Waterville’s firefighters were up with the paper carriers Aug. 21.

The department was dispatched to a car fire on West Black Rock Road around 5 a.m.

Waterville and District Fire Department spokesperson Kevin Ernest said some papers were lost in the blaze, but no one was injured.

The 2016 Hyundai XL was extensively damaged.

RCMP joined Waterville’s firefighters at the scene.

Ernest said the fire department deemed the cause to be accidental, and it is likely the insurance provider will conduct an independent investigation.

Hyundai and Kia made international headlines in early 2019 for recalling more than 500,000 vehicles in the United States due to an issue that could potentially result in engine defects or fires.

Hyundai Canada and Kia Canada also issued an extensive list of recalls, impacting various makes and model years spanning from 2011 to 2018.

It is too soon to tell if the Black Rock car fire was a result of a manufacturing defect, Ernest said.
