THREE MILE PLAINS, N.S. — Between Jan. 21 and 25, someone broke into a seasonal residence on Panuke Lake and stole five firearms and an ATV RCMP said.

Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, public information officer with the RCMP, said nobody was home at the time of the robbery.

According to a press release, access to the main building was gained by prying the back door open.

The five long guns were stolen from a locked gun safe in a bedroom in the residence. The suspect(s) also pried open the door to the garage and took a 2007 red Suzuki "Vinson 500" ATV and a helmet.

Clarke said there are currently no details on the suspect or suspects in this case.

She added that there’s no reason to believe this matter is connected with a recent theft of firearms in Hantsport at this point in time.

“They’re being investigated separately,” Clarke said.

The Halifax Regional Police sent out a press release on Feb. 18 that they arrested two suspects in Halifax in relation to the firearm theft in Hantsport, where four firearms were stolen while the homeowner slept.

Clarke said she doesn’t think this necessarily represents a trend of increasing firearm thefts in the area but added that gun owners should take proper precautions when storing their firearms.

The RCMP are asking that anyone with information about this theft is asked to call Windsor District RCMP at 902-798-2207. Should you wish to remain anonymous call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips App.
