Federal time for drug offence
Martin Edward Borden, 61, of Ellershouse, has been handed a federal sentence for possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Borden pleaded guilty to the charge on March 29. The matter was adjourned to June 11 for sentencing.
Judge Christopher Manning sentenced Borden to 42 months in custody. The court granted a forfeiture order for offence related property, granted a secondary DNA order and imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition against Borden.
Borden committed the offence in Ellershouse and Kentville on June 28, 2018.
Jail time for various offences
Kevin Charles Purcell, 38, of no fixed address, has been sentenced to jail time for stealing a Chevrolet Cavalier from an individual; stealing a bottle of rum from the Brooklyn Petro Canada, operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, failing to comply with a demand made to him by a police officer to provide samples of his breath for analysis to determine the concentration, if any, of alcohol in his blood and failing to comply with probation.
Purcell pleaded guilty to the five charges on June 3. Purcell consented to being remanded in custody until June 10 for his sentencing hearing.
Judge Christopher Manning sentenced Purcell to a total of 180 days in custody on the five charges: 60 days for stealing a car; 30 days – to be served concurrently – for stealing a bottle of rum, 30 days – to be served concurrently – for driving while disqualified, 120 days – to be served consecutively – and a three-year driving prohibition for refusing the breathalyser and 30 days – to be served concurrently – for failing to comply with probation.
Purcell committed the offences in Brooklyn on June 1. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
Jail time for impaired driving
Charles Alan Magee, 55, of Kentville, has been sentenced to jail time for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
Magee was originally charged with causing an accident resulting in bodily harm while operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit but pleaded guilty to the lesser, included offence on Aug. 28, 2018. The court imposed a three-year driving prohibition against Magee and the matter was adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
On June 10, Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Magee to 90 days in custody plus 18 months of probation.
Magee committed the offence in North Kentville on March 9, 2018. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Magee gave breathalyser readings of 200 and 190.
A charge of, having been involved in an accident, failing to stop his vehicle and give his name and address with intent to escape civil or criminal liability was dismissed on Jan. 16 with the Crown offering no evidence.
A charge of operating a motor vehicle while his ability to do so was impaired by alcohol, thereby causing bodily harm to an individual, was withdrawn on June 10.
Jail time for various offences
Nicole Grace Danielle Veinot, 34, of Kingston, has been sentenced to jail time for stealing beauty products and personal accessories from Pharmasave; failing to comply with probation, unlawfully possessing methamphetamine (crystal meth) and stealing property from Walmart of a value not exceeding $5,000.
Veinot changed her plea to guilty to the charge of stealing property from Walmart on April 1. The matter was adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing. Veinot pleaded guilty to the other three charges on June 10.
Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Veinot to a total of 60 days in custody on the four charges: 30 days for stealing products from Pharmasave; 30 days – to be served concurrently – for failing to comply with probation, 15 days – to be served concurrently – for unlawfully possessing methamphetamine and 30 days – to be served consecutively – for stealing property from Walmart.
Veinot committed the offences in New Minas on Jan. 28 and in Wolfville on June 6. A charge of failing to comply with her recognizance and a charge of assault were withdrawn on June 10.
Conditional discharge for assaults
Erin Anna Gullison, 19, of New Minas, has been handed a conditional discharge with probation for two counts of assault.
Gullison pleaded guilty to the charges on March 26. The matters were adjourned to June 11 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Gullison a conditional discharge with 12 months of probation, including 20 hours of community service work, on the two charges.
Gullison committed the offences in North Kentville on Nov. 15, 2018.
Suspended sentence for assault
Mary Bride Hubley, 64, of Kentville, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for committing an assault.
Hubley was originally charged with using or threatening to use a weapon or an imitation thereof in committing an assault but pleaded guilty to the lesser, included offence of assault on June 11. Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Hubley a suspended sentence with 12 months of probation.
Hubley committed the offence in Kentville on Dec. 22, 2018. A charge of mischief was dismissed on June 11.
