KENTVILLE, N.S. — According to the Nova Scotia Beekeepers’ Association, 80 per cent of all flowering plants rely on bees in order to reproduce, and bees can be linked to around 35 per cent of our global food production.
Looking around the Valley, it’s clear to see that we rely on vegetation to keep the economy healthy.
Bees play a key role in the crops that are grown and the harvests that are enjoyed.
That’s a lot of work for such little creatures. Those involved with the LIFT Program thought it was time for the public to say “thank you.”
The organization held a Barbecue for the Bees fundraiser outside the Kentville Library July 19.
The LIFT Program is cited by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) as a 10-week program supported by CMHA, the Community Inclusion Society, and the Department of Community Services. It has evolved into a collection of events throughout Valley communities aimed at improving the physical and mental health of local residents.
The fundraiser began at 11 a.m. and lasted until 2:30 p.m. Volunteers were serving hotdogs and drinks for a dollar, and there was a variety of baked goods for sale.
Local artists were displaying, selling, and raffling off their pieces. There were several games for children and plenty of prizes to be won.
Proceeds raised from the event went to the Nova Scotia Beekeepers’ Association.
Both funds and awareness were raised by CHMA to help support the hundreds of beekeepers in Nova Scotia that work to sustain the economy and the environment.
