Paul Eldon Lake, 53, is facing three counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possessing a weapon dangerous to the public peace. Lake was charged after three people were stabbed overnight June 20 in downtown Kentville. There were two calls to 911 from the area of Prospect Road and Main Street reporting the stabbings at around 1 a.m.

At the time of the alleged offences, Lake was serving an eight-month conditional sentence, which included a daily curfew. Lake admitted to failing to comply with curfew during an appearance in Kentville provincial court on July 21. It was alleged that he breached the conditional sentence by also possessing a weapon and failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Judge Alan Tufts terminated the conditional sentence and Lake will serve the remaining time, 14 days, in custody. Lake is already in custody, as he earlier consented to being remanded.

Lake elected trial by judge and jury on the attempted murder and aggravated assault charges. The court was unable to find a suitable date for a preliminary inquiry on July 21. Defence attorney Chris Manning said about three-quarters of a day would be needed for the hearing.

The court was considering a date in late January, but Tufts said they couldn’t have Lake “sitting in jail for six to nine months because there aren’t enough resources.” Manning will appear on Lake’s behalf on July 24 to set a date for the preliminary inquiry.

Police allege that Lake injured three people on June 20: two men, age 24 and 26, and a 36-year-old woman. According to court records, the stabbing victims include Timothy Lee Lake, Nathaniel Theriault and Sherry Renouf. The accused was in a domestic relationship with Renouf.
