AVONPORT, N.S. — A woman and child are recuperating after firefighters helped extricate them from a vehicle Wednesday evening.
Paul Maynard, deputy fire chief with the Hantsport Fire Department, said they received word at 6:48 p.m. that a single vehicle accident occurred May 22 near Exit 9, Avonport.
A black half-ton truck, teetering on its side, was in the ditch along the busy 101 series highway.
“The vehicle was quite unstable upon our arrival,” said Maynard.
“We had to stabilize the vehicle and then perform an extrication on the truck to safely remove both the adult and the child that were trapped in the vehicle,” he said.
“It appears the vehicle rolled several times before coming to a stop in the ditch on the righthand side of the road.”
Hantsport and Wolfville firefighters both responded to the scene, due to an auto-aid protocol, and worked in concert to slow the flow of traffic, stabilize the vehicle and help the pair out of the truck. About 25 firefighters attended, plus paramedics and RCMP officer.
Maynard estimates they were on scene for about an hour and a half.
“By the time we stabilized it and did the cutting and got them safely out of the vehicle, it was about 45 minutes,” said Maynard.
Even though it was “a fairly significant crash on the 101,” both the adult and the child received non-life-threatening injuries. The child was treated at the scene and the woman was transported to the hospital.
“They’re very fortunate that they got out fairly unscathed from the vehicle.”
