A new floating wheelchair will help more beachgoers take a dip at Albro Lake beach.

Halifax Parks and Recreation purchased the Mobi-chair just in time for the Dartmouth beach’s first official day of the season on Monday.

The floating wheelchair will be available for anyone to use while the beach is being supervised.

Users must have a support person to help them in and out of the chair, as well as accompany them while they’re in the water, a Halifax Regional Municipality spokeswoman said.

The beach will also be equipped with Mobi-mats to make wheelchair accessible paths over the sand.

“This is the first Mobi-mat and we’re planning to have a mat added to Chocolate Lake beach this summer,” the spokeswoman said.

A floating wheelchair was placed at Chocolate Lake last summer and the municipality is looking to add more Mobi chairs and mats at other municipal beaches “as resources allow.”

The accessible beach equipment is also available at the Inverness beach in Cape Breton.
