LOCKHARTVILLE, N.S. — Firefighters helped extricate the lone occupant of a passenger van after the vehicle crashed near Five Points April 10.
Hantsport deputy fire chief Paul Maynard said they were called to a motor vehicle accident around 4:30 p.m.
“The female driver veered off the road, struck a power pole and landed in the ditch. There’s probably three or four feet of water in the creek that’s running through the area,” said Maynard.
Emergency crews immediately began assessing the situation.
The vehicle had come to rest on its side, with the front end pointing towards the sky, Maynard said.
“It was a bit of a difficult extrication simply because the way the vehicle landed in the water,” said Maynard. “We had to secure the vehicle using a winch and some blocking and we used a ladder and a stokes basket to remove the patient from the vehicle and transfer her to paramedics on scene.”
The driver was conscious during the rescue and Maynard said it’s believed she sustained minor injuries.
About 15 firefighters attended the scene. The end of Willow Street, which connects to Highway 1 and Lockhartville Road, was blocked to traffic for about an hour.
Employees with the RCMP, EHS, and Nova Scotia Power all attended the scene.
