Dealt with forged cheques
Adina Belinda Whiston, 38, of Cambridge, has been handed a conditional discharge with probation for three counts of dealing with a forged document, a cheque, as if it were genuine.
Whiston pleaded guilty to the three charges on Feb. 26 and the matters were adjourned to May 15 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Whiston a conditional discharge with eight months of reporting probation on the three charges.
Whiston committed the offences in Berwick on April 23, 26, and on May 14, 2018. Three counts of possessing stolen property of a value exceeding $5,000 and three counts of committing forgery by knowingly making a false cheque with the intent that it be acted upon as if it were genuine were withdrawn on May 15.
Conditional sentence for assault
Selena Hartling, 22, of Kentville, will serve a period of imprisonment in the community for committing an assault.
Hartling was originally charged with carrying a weapon in committing an assault but pleaded guilty to the lesser, included offence of assault on March 13. The matter was adjourned to May 14 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Hartling a three-month conditional sentence order with house arrest for the first two months, to be followed by daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the remaining month. The court granted a secondary DNA order.
Hartling committed the offence in North Kentville on April 15, 2017. A charge of uttering a death threat was dismissed on May 14.
Fine, suspended sentence
Ronald Michael Peters, 27, of Grand Pre, has been fined for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit, failing to attend court in accordance with a summons, failing to attend court in accordance with an appearance notice in which he had been named and driving while disqualified.
Peters pleaded guilty to the charges on Jan. 29. The matters were adjourned to May 13 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
Judge Paul Scovil fined Peters a total of $1,500 and sentenced him to 12 months of probation for driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. The court imposed a one-year driving prohibition against Peters.
Peters was fined a total of $1,000 and was sentenced to six months of probation, to be served consecutively, for driving while disqualified.
He was handed a suspended sentence with 18 months of probation, to be served concurrently, on each of the two counts of failing to attend court as directed.
Peters committed the offences in Wolfville on Jan. 26 and on June 12, 2018, and in Kentville on July 31 and Sept. 11, 2018. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Peters gave breathalyser readings of 180 and 180.
A charge of failing to attend court in accordance with a promise to appear in which he had been named was withdrawn on May 13.
Curative treatment conditional discharge
Charles Allison Hazel, 37, of Waterville, has been handed a curative treatment conditional discharge for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
Hazel changed his plea to guilty on Nov. 13, 2018. The court imposed a two-year driving prohibition against Hazel and the matter was adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be updated, for a curative treatment conditional discharge application to be made and for sentencing.
On May 13, Judge Christopher Manning handed Hazel a curative treatment conditional discharge with 18 months of reporting probation.
Hazel committed the offence in Hillaton on March 16, 2018. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Hazel gave breathalyser readings of 130 and 120.
Suspended sentence for thefts
Heather Nicole Sturney, 37, of Kentville, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for stealing property of a value not exceeding $5,000 from Jason’s Independent Grocer and for stealing property of a value not exceeding $5,000 from Mader’s Tobacco.
Sturney pleaded guilty to the charges on Jan. 29. The matters were adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
On May 13, Judge Paul Scovil handed Sturney a suspended sentence with 12 months of probation on the two charges. In relation to the charge of stealing property from Jason’s Independent Grocer, Sturney was ordered to complete 25 hours of community service work and was ordered to pay $36.62 in restitution to the victim.
Sturney committed the offences in Kentville on Aug. 16, 2018. Two counts of possessing stolen property of a value not exceeding $5,000 were withdrawn on May 13.
Assault, undertaking, recognizance offences
Nicholas Ryan Dill, 26, of Greenwood, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for committing an assault, failing to comply with his undertaking and failing to comply with his recognizance.
Dill changed his pleas to guilty on May 14. Judge Daniel Macrury handed Dill a suspended sentence with 12 months of probation on the three charges.
Dill committed the offences in Kingston on June 12, 2018. Three more counts of assault, two more counts of failing to comply with his recognizance and charges of unlawful confinement, uttering a death threat and uttering a threat to kill an individual’s cats were dismissed on May 14 with the Crown offering no evidence.
Fine, probation for assault
Mark Houghton, 44, of Kentville, has been fined and sentenced to probation for committing an assault.
Houghton changed his plea to guilty on May 14. Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek fined Houghton a total of $250 and sentenced him to one year of probation.
Houghton committed the offence in Kentville on Nov. 26, 2018. A charge of unlawful confinement was dismissed on May 14.
Stole from store
Caleb Michael Spencer, 24, of Kentville, has been handed a conditional discharge with probation for stealing merchandise from Walmart.
Spencer changed his plea to guilty on May 14. Judge Daniel Macrury handed Spencer a conditional discharge with six months of probation, including 20 hours of community service work.
Spencer committed the offence in New Minas on April 27, 2017.
