A Kentville provincial court judge has denied bail to a Dartmouth man arrested after a shooting incident in Berwick in December.

Judge Claudine MacDonald said 26-year-old Dhari Salman Shalaan must remain in custody until his next court appearance, when he is expected to enter a plea.

His oft-adjourned bail hearing was held Wednesday afternoon, lasting until the supper hour.

Four witnesses were called to testify. Evidence at the bail hearing can’t be reported because of a publication ban.

Shalaan was arrested Dec. 11 in a wooded area along Parker Condon Road, which runs parallel to Highway 101 in Berwick. It’s alleged he was the driver of a car that police pulled over at 4 a.m. on the the highway, and that he assaulted an RCMP officer and escaped custody. He was arrested a few hours later by members of the RCMP emergency response team.

A firearm was discharged during the incident, and it’s believed Shalaan was wounded. Police haven’t said who fired or how many shots were involved, but did say that the officer involved was not hurt.

Radio transmissions from an ambulance to Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville shortly after Shalaan was arrested indicated they were transporting someone with a gunshot wound.

Shalaan appeared in court in December with heavy bandages on his right wrist and right arm above the elbow.

Police found a firearm five days later in woods near where Shalaan was arrested.

He is facing charges of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, escaping custody, impeding performance of duty while using violence, impeding performance of duty by threatening to use violence, using a firearm while fleeing police, careless handling of a restricted weapon, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

A passenger in the vehicle, Treyton Alexander Marsman, 21, of Lakeside, was charged with obstruction for giving a false name in the investigation into the traffic stop, which court documents say was for suspected impaired driving.

He is free on conditions and is scheduled to return to Kentville provincial court on March 29.

The RCMP investigation is ongoing, as is one by the province’s Serious incident Response Team.
