KENTVILLE, N.S. — EHS Life Flight swiftly transported a 59-year-old Kings County man to a Halifax hospital after he was struck by a pickup truck while walking in a crosswalk.
The pedestrian-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Aberdeen and Main streets, at about 9:40 a.m. April 10.
Kentville Police Service, EHS paramedics and members of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the aid of the pedestrian. A media release circulated by the Kentville Police Service shortly before 1 p.m. said the man suffered “undetermined injuries.”
The 66-year-old driver of the truck, which was heading south on Aberdeen, was handed a summary offence ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian, deputy chief Darryl Brown said in the Kentville Police Service statement.
The truck driver is also from Kings County.
Brown says collisions involving pedestrians are rare occurrences in Kentville, but added vigilance is a must at all downtown crosswalks and intersections.
“The amount of complaints from the public regarding crosswalk safety issues are low,” he said.
“The intersection at Cornwallis and Main Street would be the busiest with east-west Main Street traffic headed north merging on to Cornwallis and other traffic continuing east on Main Street. There are three marked crosswalk sections at this intersection.”
Brown said pedestrians have the right of way on crosswalks, but he recommends pedestrians ensure incoming vehicles have made a full stop before proceeding to cross the street.
“Make certain before leaving the curb that eye contact has been made with the driver and the driver acknowledges their intention to cross the road by stopping,” he said.
As for the latest collision, the investigation into the cause is ongoing. The Kentville Police Service is urging witnesses to get in touch by calling 1-902-678-3378.
