KENTVILLE, NS - A New Minas man charged with second-degree murder remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Nikolas Derrick Salsman, 30, is charged with second-degree murder in the Sept. 24 death of 34-year-old Trevor Allen Joseph Pelton in New Minas.

Salsman was present in Kentville provincial court in custody on Oct. 18. The defence is still waiting for Crown disclosure. The matter was adjourned to Nov. 15 for a possible bail hearing and election of court.

RCMP arrested Salsman on Sept. 24 after Pelton’s body was found in the yard of Salsman’s parents on Lockhart Drive. Police were called there just before 9:30 a.m. An ambulance attended the scene and investigators spent the day at the property.

Neighbours told The Chronicle Herald on Sept. 24 that they heard loud voices in the front yard of the home at 77 Lockhart Dr. shortly before police arrived. The accused lives at the house with his parents. RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said Pelton was deceased when police arrived.
