RCMP say they have recovered a firearm from the area around the site of a traffic stop in Berwick last week that ended in a firearm being discharged.
Police said they found a firearm Sunday near where Dhari Salam Shalaan 26, was arrested on the morning of Dec. 11, a few hours after a car he was allegedly driving was pulled over by an RCMP officer on the west-bound on-ramp of Highway 101.
Police said a firearm was discharged in the course of the driver being arrested at about 4 a.m. but haven't said who fired. Shalaan, of Halifax, previously appeared in court with his hand bandaged at the wrist and above the elbow.
Cpl. Jennifer Clarke wouldn’t say what kind of firearm was found. She said a change in the weather on the weekend helped police find the weapon.
Shalaan has been in custody since the arrest, and has a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday on charges of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and escaping custody.
He has now also been charged with impeding performance of duty, using violence, impeding performance of duty by threatening to use violence, using a firearm while fleeing police, careless handling of a restricted weapon, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapons for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm while prohibited.
More charges are possible, Clarke said.
The officer who pulled the vehicle over was not injured, police have said.
A passenger in the vehicle, Treyton Alexander Marsman, 21, of Lakeside, was charged with obstruction on Dec. 12.
He was held in custody pending a court appearance this past Tuesday, when he was released after being sentenced to six days in jail deemed served for breaching a conditional sentence order be was serving for a break and enter in Halifax County.
He is scheduled to return to Kentville provincial court on Jan. 29.
The RCMP ivestigation is ongoing, as is one by the province’s Serious incident Response Team.
