ASHMORE, N.S. — A tractor-trailer smashed into a line of traffic on Highway 101 in Digby County on Wednesday morning sending one person to hospital.

The crash occurred east of Weymouth in the community of Ashmore at about 9:20 a.m. The tractor-trailer crashed into vehicles that had stopped because of an earlier accident, RCMP said in a news release.

The crash caused a chain collision involving three vehicles. The driver of the vehicle at the end of the lineup was taken to hospital via LifeFlight with injuries RCMP called serious but not life-threatening.

The tractor-trailer driver, who wasn’t hurt, was served a summary offence ticket for following too closely. He’s scheduled to appear in Digby provincial court Aug. 9.

The other crash happened about an hour earlier on the same stretch of highway. A vehicle that pulled out to pass a lineup in the Gilberts Cove area struck another vehicle that was turning left at the front of the line of traffic.

One vehicle rolled and another ended up in the ditch. The occupants of the car that was struck were trapped in the car but no serious injuries resulted. The occupants of both vehicles were taken to hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries.

Charges may be pending against one driver.

The highway was closed for several hours while emergency crews attended the scenes of the crashes.
