BERWICK - There will soon be a new four-way stop along the main drag in Berwick.
The intersection of Commercial Street and Main Street is slated to become a four-way stop Dec. 6 at 10 a.m.
“We have the experience that many people coming in off the highway are still in highway mode as they progress up Commercial Street. We have people driving 70 kilometres an hour into the downtown area,” said Don Regan, chief administrative officer for the Town of Berwick.
“We hope to bring the speed of cars down and make this street a little safer.”
Town council has been considering this area as a prime location for a four-way intersection for about three years, Regan said.
“There have been a number of fender benders at that intersection over of the years – quite a few.”
It’s possible the four-way intersection will eventually be controlled by traffic lights, Regan added.
“We’d set it up so the lights dwell on green on Commercial Street, and only pull up a green on Main Street if the traffic sensors pick up a vehicle, or if the crosswalk sign buttons are pushed.”
The estimated cost of adding the new four-way stop intersection along Commercial Street is in the ballpark of $5,000.
“We find they really do calm the traffic down,” said Regan.
