AUBURN, NS – Like their counterparts across the country and around the world, the Aylesford and District Lions continue to work hard to benefit the wider community.
The club acknowledges that its charitable work is made possible through community residents and businesses supporting the Lions’ dinners, auctions, raffles, bingo and more.
At the club’s November dinner meeting, cheques were presented to a number of groups and organizations, including $5,000 to Grand View Manor to help purchase a replacement for the organization’s aging bus. Manor representatives Meena McIsaac and Leanne Tate were on hand to accept the cheque.
Cheques for $1,000 were presented to two groups from West Kings District High School that are going to the Dominican Republic to help build houses, do other missionary work and experience the culture. The groups are the “Dream Team” and “Make a Change”.
A cheque for $1,380, the proceeds from a dinner the club sponsored, was presented to a group of West Kings students to help finance a trip to Europe.

A donation of $100 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Klahanie Kamping owner Gary Smith was approved. Smith and Klahanie Kamping have helped support the club’s swimming lesson program for several years.
A cheque for $6,000 was prepared to send to Guide Dogs to sponsor the Aylesford Lions’ second dog.
There was the formal induction of a new member, as Baby Lion Lynn Vermette became the newest member of the Aylesford and District Lions Club. Past Council Chairman Bob Lyle officiated the event. Four other guests who are interested in becoming members were on hand to observe.
The Aylesford Lions celebrate special occasions at monthly dinner meetings, held the third Wednesday of every month. The menu for the November meeting included a hearty roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes, carrots and turnip with pie and ice cream for dessert.
Another successful seniors’ dinner
The Aylesford and District Lions and other community volunteers kept the club’s long-standing Christmas tradition going for the 34th year by serving dinner to local seniors at the hall in Auburn.
160 people enjoyed a homemade Christmas dinner that included turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, turnips, squash, baby carrots, homemade stuffing and tea or coffee. This was topped off with fruit cocktail, ice cream and a wafer bar for dessert. There were lots of compliments and words of gratitude from those who attended.
Santa and Mrs. Claus made a special appearance, handing out candy canes to everyone on hand and sharing some kind words.
A Hants County group “The Thole Pins” played traditional Christmas songs, old favourites and Newfie music for the crowd before and after the dinner.
The Aylesford and District Lions Club extends thanks to the community of volunteers and donors who help make this and other club events so successful. The club’s next event is the New Year’s Eve Dance, taking place tonight, Dec. 31. Tickets are available from the club.
