BERWICK, N.S. — Two words: free food.

Interested? Thought so.

There will be plenty of free, family-friendly fun to be had as part of the upcoming Berwick Royal Weekend, says Town of Berwick recreation co-ordinator Taylor Boylan.

A full lineup of events is planned for June 29.

“We called it Royally Red and Rockin’. It’s from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Rainforth Park. There will be a community barbecue, face painting, music, games, a bouncy house, and the splash pad will be open. The best part is everything is free, sponsored by the Town of Berwick.”

The festival will include a fitting tribute to the late Carol Boylan-Hartling, who is fondly remembered as a well-loved community member and town employee in Berwick.

The grand opening of Carol’s Place, a new multi-use building in the park, is slated for 10:30 a.m.

“Carol was a member of our recreation department as the recreation co-ordinator who passed away in April of 2018,” says Boylan.

“Carol was a huge believer in our community and especially in our youth programs, ensuring everyone had access to day camps and after-school programs. Programs like these will now be held in Carol’s Place, but it will also be used for other things.”

This is also the first year that a fireworks display will be held in the park. The show is set to start around 9 p.m.

The town has a special tradition leading up to the Canada Day long weekend, Boylan says.

“Leading up to the 29th, we are doing our third annual Red Chair Challenge. We encourage all business owners and residents to put a red chair outside their house or business. It’s partly a decorating contest but it also shows how friendly and welcoming Berwick is. Right now, from my office, I can already see five chairs.”

Music lovers ready to be rocked need not travel far after a taking in a full day of activities in Berwick on the 29th. Tribute band Queen Flash is slated to perform in Berwick’s Kings Mutual Century Centre June 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Regular tickets are $35, and can be purchased in advance online at https://www.ticketor.com/berwicklions/event/queen-flash-concert-157409.
