Halifax Regional firefighters are on the scene of a carbon monoxide leak at an apartment building on Birches Drive in Halifax.
“Right now there are raised carbon monoxide levels; I don't know why or where it's coming from,” division commander Stephen Martyn said. “We have three crews on scene right now investigating.”
Martyn wasn't sure whether the fire department was called because of an internal alarm or because people weren't feeling well.
Paramedics were also called to the scene near the Armdale roundabout and were assessing residents of the building, who were put on a transit bus for shelter.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas created by the burning of fossil fuels and other items. Exposure to low levels can cause tiredness, headaches and shortness of breath.
Higher levels or long exposure can lead to dizziness, chest pain, poor vision and difficulty thinking. It can be fatal if people don't get to fresh air.
