I am blessed with a wonderful father, and my awesome husband impresses me every day with his love for our children. I don’t take either of these fantastic men for granted, so Father’s Day is an important date on my calendar.
Father’s Day provides a wonderful opportunity to let the special men in our lives know how special they are to us. Phone calls, breakfast in bed, cards and gifts are wonderful… but putting a little extra effort into making handmade items is important for children. Each year, my three boys let me know how they want to celebrate their dad, and I work hard to help them bring their plans to fruition.
Last year, my boys made a “donut hole bouquet”. It was a darling alternative to a traditional bouquet of flowers. The boys took donut holes and attached them to the top of bamboo skewers. Then they arranged the skewers and donuts into a bouquet and secured the base with an elastic band. The final product was wrapped in tissue paper and tied with a ribbon.
This year, given my husband’s love for snacks, my boys decided to prepare a Father’s Day snack buffet, filled with all of his favourite treats. We purchased inexpensive cannisters from the dollar store, filled them with his favourite snacks, and added “punny” notes to each of the jars.
We filled the canisters with: flavoured popcorn (with a "You are the best POP in the world!" tag), donuts (with a "We DONUT know what we'd do without you!" tag), peanuts (with a "We are NUTS for you, Dad!" tag), and Reese’s Pieces (with a "We love you to PIECES, Dad!" tag). Also, because our family loves a good campfire, we added a fun "We love you S'MORE every day!" tag to a box of S'mores
I’m sure the Father’s Day snack buffet my kids put together will be a big hit with their dad. My husband is going to love snacking on all his favourite goodies while he enjoys some relaxing time on the couch watching golf or a movie.
My boys are also planning on creating a festive atmosphere with some inexpensive decorations, such as a brightly-coloured tablecloth for the snack buffet, a homemade candy bouquet centrepiece, balloons, and frames filled with their pictures.
Photos can be gifts too. Each year, my boys answer questions about why they love their dad, and I use photo editing software to add their answers to their pictures. It is one of my favourite traditions and, each year, my husband proudly displays the updated photos in his office.
These are all simple treat and gift ideas, but they are still unique and fun. They show the special man in your life that you spent time trying to come up with a thoughtful gift for him.
