DEEP BROOK, N.S. — A three-kilometre stretch of trail through Cornwallis Park is getting some upgrades and the folks at the Annapolis Basin Conference Centre couldn’t be happier.
“The hiking trail in Cornwallis is widely used by local residents, promoted in local brochures, and has been enjoyed by visiting ABCC guests and the nearly 1,000 cadets that we host every summer,” said Beth Earle, conference centre CEO. “The positive benefits to hiking are well-known, and our organization is pleased to facilitate the pursuit of active living in our community.”
In addition to the five-acre site on the shores of the Annapolis Basin, ABCC owns 300 acres of land around the community of Cornwallis Park, where the trail is located. The three-kilometre trail loops around Ditmars Brook, features a ravine and includes paths of varied difficulty. Numerous bird and other wildlife species are routinely spotted along the trail.
The trail improvement project will replace three footbridges and a boardwalk, and once the usability of the trail is improved, ABCC plans to increase the length of the trail to five kilometres.
The $15,478 project was possible with the support of a Community Recreation Capital Grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, and an in-kind donation of labour, supplies and equipment from the Annapolis Valley Trails Coalition.
