UPPER WOODS HARBOUR, NS – Firefighters have gotten the upper hand on a forest fire burning in the backwoods of Upper Woods Harbour, Shelburne County, thanks to some overnight rain, a shift in wind direction and a little luck.
Fire crews from the Department of Lands and Forestry and several local fire departments including Woods Harbour/Shag Harbour and Island Barrington Passage responded to the fire call mid-afternoon on Sept. 11. By late afternoon the fire was still out of control, burning an estimated 10 hectares.
Ground crews worked well into the evening battling the blaze using pumps and hoses .
A Lands and Forestry helicopter was on scene the Wednesday morning dumping water on the fire while ground crews continued to tackle the flames below.
Fire crews from Lands and Forestry and the Woods Harbour Shag Harbour volunteer department are expected to remain on scene throughout the day.
There was rain on in the evening on Sept. 11 and overnight into Sept. 12 in much of the province and while it did rain some in southwestern Nova Scotia, it wasn't enough to change the overall no burn ban that continues.
