Donald Farquhar — Halifax

Donald Farquhar of Falmouth NS, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2017 at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, at the young age of 98. Don was born in Cereal, Alberta on August 30, 1919. He was one of four children born to Harry and Edith (Matsell) Farquhar. Don was raised in Hortonville, Kings County on the family farm. In his younger years he bought a 1939 Indian Motorcycle ($65) to travel the dirt roads at higher speeds than safe to visit a girlfriend in Bear River. He enjoyed the land and farming but signed up to join the Merchant Marines during the Second World War. Maybe the love of the sea was inherited from his Grandfather, Captain James Agustus Farquhar, who sailed and salvaged the Atlantic waters in the 1800's. After the war he met and married Katherine Ruth Anthony, a young nurse from Windsor, NS. They raised five children on the Hortonville farm, where he loved making things grow. The family finally ended up in Ashdale, Hants County, where Don built and operated a sawmill for some years. He always had his garden full of vegetables. He loved dancing with the ladies and listening to fiddle music. Don lived in Falmouth with his partner Dorothy Burgess who was by his side for many years, until he was admitted to the Camp Hill facility. Don is survived by his children Tim (Lauralee), Ann Whalen, Mike (Valerie), Scott (Gillian), Jay (Patti), sister-in-law Madeleine, brother-in-law Douglas Sawyer, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wives Katherine (Anthony) and Judith (Brown), brother Ben, and sisters Joan Hutchinson and Shirley Sawyer. Cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date; there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences can be sent to Lindsay's Funeral Home in Windsor. https://www.arbormemorial.ca/en/lindsays/obituaries.We would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Camp Hill who were kind and cared very well for Don.
