Ethel Lillian Lake - age 93, of Wolfville, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born on May 8, 1925 in Black River, she was a daughter of the late Percy H. Atwell and Hilda (Jordan) Nowlin. Ethel was a veteran of the Second World War. She began her service as a Leading Air Woman - LAW with the Royal Canadian Air Force working as a clerk. She was later employed as a telephone operator with MT&T. In addition to working as a cashier at the Highland Canteen she also looked after the laundry, pressing and starching for the Wolfville Holland Bakery. Ethel ran the family business, organizing and coordinating delivery of The Chronicle Herald in one of the largest recognized markets on the east coast and was a night porter in Seminary House at Acadia University. She is survived by daughters, Sharon Lake (Richard Knott), Black River; Catherine (Lewis) How, Sunken Lake; Paula (Michael) Watson, Western Shore; Julie (Glenn) Hawkesworth, Black River; sons, Al (Eileen – deceased), Halifax; John (Joan), Greenwich; Carter, Wolfville Ridge; Marty, Toronto; Daniel, Wolfville; sisters, Helen Levy, Black River; Connie Hudson, Timberlea; Dianne Allen, Las Vegas US; Joan Nowlin, Wolfville; Marilyn MacKenzie, Halifax; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold; an infant son, Carver (Carter’s twin); two sisters, Jackie Clifford and Judi Atwell Munro; a brother, Wayne Nowlin; a daughter-in-law, Eileen Lake; her step-father, Morley Nowlin and her step-mother, Mildred (Jackson) Atwell. There will be no visitation, by request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion and funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, The Reverend Lewis How officiating. Burial will take place in the Willow Bank Cemetery, Wolfville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Black River Community Club or a charity of choice.
