WINDSOR, N.S. — The Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League championships are well underway as Windsor, Noel Road, Sherose Island and Amherst let their bats do the talking Aug. 31.
The final day of play started Sept. 1 at 10 a.m.; with another match scheduled for 12:30 p.m. It’s anticipated the winner will be crowned by mid-afternoon.
IN EARLIER PLAY
In opening game play, the Windsor Knights went over the Amherst Athletics 10-4.
The Knights went up 1-0 in the second on a hit by Derek Hart, who later scored after a walk and an error and a wild pitch.
Joe Beaton, Hart and Tyler Beach all doubled to start the bottom of the fourth. A Paul Humphreys single and a Dave Swindall double finished the Knights’ scoring as the Knights connected for four runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead.
Amherst came back with three consecutive singles followed by a Knights error to make it 5-1.
The Knights scored two more in the fifth on three runs and three hits and an Amherst error. Austin Sabean led off with a double for Windsor followed by a walk to Alex Patterson and a Beaton single.
The Knights scored two more in the bottom of the sixth on a double from Cory Whitney and base hits from Patterson and Beaton.
It was 10-1 entering the top of the seventh when the Athletics opened with four consecutive hits on two singles and a double followed by another single to plate three runs and lose 10-4.
The second game of the day saw the Noel Road Jays eke out a 5-4 victory over the Sherose Island Schooners.
This game went down to the final strike in the bottom of the seventh. The teams were knotted 1-1 entering the top of the sixth when the Jays’ Shaun Marshall started off with a base hit and Mike White hit an inside fastball, which went about 20-30 feet in the air over the fence in left field to put the Jays up 3-1. The Schooners collected three base hits after two were out in the bottom of the sixth to close to within 3-2.
With two out in the top of the seventh, the Jays struck for two runs after a batter was hit, the right fielder made an error for the Schooners, and then White and Burke singled to score two runs for the Jays.
The Schooners attempted to tie the score, but only managed two runs to suffer the loss.
The afternoon saw the Amherst Athletics square off against the Sherose Island Schooners and the Windsor Knights take on the Noel Road Jays. Those scores were not available as of press time.
