‘A lot of potential to improve’: Horton drops home opener to Citadel 37-7

The Griffins simply committed too many errors to be able to compete with the Phoenix.
“Citadel has been the strongest program in the NSSAF for the past 10 years - their school is a combination of the old QEH high school and St. Pats high school, they have a large number of students to choose from,” said Griffins head coach Steve Melanson. “On top of that, they have many qualified and experienced assistant coaches, along with a head coach who is more of a general manager who gets great coaches to run the team. It’s always a challenge to play a well established program.”
The defence, which was on the field a large amount of time, was led by Kyle Chappus and Matt Holmes. Recently returned Jayden Simmonds also had a strong defensive evening.
“We are a young team with a lot of potential to improve,” said Melanson. “I would say our team played well on defense and showed some positives on offense .”
The only Griffin to score was a last minute pass play from Caleb Melanson to Alex Hayes converted by Luke Johnson.

The Griffins hope to get back on track when they host the Dartmouth Spartan at Raymond Field on Sept. 22, added Melanson.
“We will learn from this experience and start to prepare for Dartmouth High this Friday at 7 p.m. at Acadia,” he said. “Our coaching staff saw a lot of positive things in our game versus Citadel and we are very excited moving forward.”
