It was a disappointing week for two of the three competitive Valley minor football teams. The atom Bulldogs topped Timberlea 8-0 to improve to 3-0 on the season, but the bantams and peewees both fell short against Timberlea, the bantams losing 14-7 and the peewees 33-9.

The atom Bulldogs were the only Valley team to score a win in minor football action on the Sept. 20 weekend.

For a second week in a row, the atoms squeaked out an 8-0 victory, this time over Timberlea Sept. 20 on the road to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs scored on their opening drive, Riley Fulton connecting with Elias Jones on a three-yard screen pass for what would be the game’s only touchdown.  An Emmit Mailman two-point convert gave Valley an early 8-0 lead.

According to head coach Paul Arsenault, “the offence then handed off to our defence to do their thing” – which they did, forcing three turnovers in a solid team effort. Arsenault confirmed 13 different boys chipped in with tackles.

As a whole, he said, the Bulldogs “are playing like a team and doing their job.”

The bantam Bulldogs also took on Timberlea, and though the effort was definitely there, the Bulldogs ended up on the wrong end of a 14-7 decision.

Valley started strong, and like the atoms, scored on their first offensive possession, Caleb Melanson completing a touchdown pass to Jack Hayes, with Kaleb Winter adding the convert.

However, while the Bulldogs, according to head coach Kevin Hayes, “were able to march up and down the field all day, thanks to inopportune errors, turnovers and penalties, including a recalled touchdown, they were unable to convert any further.”

Timberlea, meanwhile, tied the game in the second half on “a couple of defensive miscues” by the Valley defence.

The score remained 7-7 until the final minute. With 34 seconds left on the clock, Timberlea took the lead with a touchdown on a fake field goal attempt.

According to Hayes, the Titans “were patient and well-coached, and fully deserved the victory,” which dropped the bantam Bulldogs to 2-1 on the season.

The peewee Bulldogs also suffered their first loss of the season, 33-9 at the hands of Timberlea.

The Bulldogs’ only major score came on a rushing touchdown by Sami Whidden. Defensively, Kyle Woodworth contributed several tackles and a potentially momentum-changing interception, but his teammates were unable to capitalize.

All three competitive Bulldogs’ teams are back in action Sept. 27 on their home field, with the bantams kicking things off at noon, the peewees following at 2 p.m. and the atoms at 4 p.m.
