Following a grueling defensive struggle in Antigonish Sept. 12, in which the Avon View Avalanche football team defeated Dr. J.H. Gillis High by a score of 12-6, the local team's defense were called upon again this past weekend to help secure a victory.

The Avalanche won their 2014 home opener by doubling West Kings 6-3 on Sunday, Sept. 21. The win improves their record to 2-1 on the season.

The Avalanche opened the game's scoring on the opening drive with Bronson Lee recording the touchdown. Lee's rushing game was top notch as he rushed 30 yards to give AV the 6-0 lead. On the day, Lee had nine individual carries for 70 yards.

Justin Crossley also carried the ball 10 times for 50 yards.

Lee's touchdown was the only scoring the Avalanche could manage. The defense took over and played a strong game, with Mike Goudey leading the way with 12 strong tackles. Austin Sabean, who shut down a West Kings threat with an interception, had five tackles.

Sabean also did the majority of quarterbacking Sept. 21, completing five of nine passes for short yardage. Sabean also rushed for 50 yards, bringing the Avalanche's total to 170 yards on the ground for the afternoon.

The Avalanche now turns their attention to Central Kings where they play Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m.

The Avalanche will then take their bye week before returning home for a game Thanksgiving afternoon. The 3:30 p.m. grudge match will be against Northeast Kings, who handed the Avalanche their only loss of the season by a count of 40-9.
