The NKEC Titans football team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 46-6 win over the Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals Sept. 21 on Kinsmen Field in Canning.
Titans’ head coach Reg Ogilvie acknowledged the Royals are “very young and inexperienced,” but he was impressed by their coaching and discipline.
“Give them time together and more game experience, and they will be a formidable, tough football team,” he said Sept. 22.
Ogilvie also continues to be impressed by his team, which won by a lopsided score for the second time in the first three weeks of the season. NKEC, he said, “played very well in all three phases of the game – offence, defence and special teams.”
He added, “we are trying to build our program, and we have had many younger players join us this past week and a half. We were able to get most of them into the game for some valuable experience and the fun of a live contest.”
Running back and co-captain Riley Misner led the way for the Titans offensively with more than 200 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns.
Jon Main also had a touchdown, while Allan Bond caught a touchdown pass and ran back an interception for another touchdown.
Defensively, Main, the key to the defence, had “at least 15 tackles,” and also picked off an interception. Shane Connell had three sacks and Marcel Bolland one, and Darren Higgins recovered a fumble.
Coach Ogilvie said the decision by NSSAF football to split into three divisions based on school population “has been beneficial for our program, and I think for Central Kings, West Kings, Avon View and Dr. J.H. Gillis as well.
“The games (between the Division 3 schools) are fun for the players and fans and allow our schools to build our programs and get more kids involved.”
In the other game Sept. 21 featuring Division 3 opponents, West Kings and Avon View hooked up in what turned out to be a defensive struggle, with Avon View prevailing by a 6-3 score.
Through three weeks of the season, Avon View had a 2-1 record. Central Kings, which had a bye this past week, was at 2-0, NKEC at 2-1 and Dr. Gillis and West Kings both at 0-2.
The news wasn’t as good for the Horton Griffins, who are playing Division 1 (by choice) and were in tough Sept. 20 against Citadel. The final score was 41-0 for the Halifax school, but Horton head coach Alec Hyndman wasn’t too displeased.
“With 10 seconds left in the second quarter, it was 6-0 Citadel, then they threw a long bomb for a touchdown on the final play of the half,” Hyndman said.
Other than that, “we gave them two safeties and two single points” in the first half, for 13 points overall. “I’m really happy with that,” he said.
Citadel added three touchdowns in the second half, along with two more safeties on punts and a field goal to round out the scoring.
“We hung with them for a half, and they only scored four touchdowns in all,” Hyndman said.
Horton, he pointed out, played the game with 27 players, and was down four starters. Citadel, on the other hand, had a full roster of 55 players, and had reserves at some positions that were better than Horton’s starters, he said.
“You can’t compete against teams like that with numbers like we have,” he said. “We have the athletes, we just don’t have the numbers.”
Hyndman continues to be OK with playing Division 1, though he said, “you’re going to have blowouts when you play Citadel, C.P. Allen and Sir John A.”
Horton, now 1-2 on the season, plays Sir John A. Macdonald Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. at Acadia.
The Griffins, he said, “were pretty pumped after the first half” against Citadel. “It should hopefully give us some confidence heading into this weekend.”
In other action involving Valley teams this coming weekend, Central Kings hosts Avon View Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. in Cambridge, and West Kings hosts Dr. Gillis Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. in Auburn. NKEC has the bye this week.
