CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Defenceman Doug Blaisdell scored the winner Saturday as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Acadia Axemen 2-1 Friday in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey action.
Cody Payne scored a power-play goal for the home side at MacLauchlan Arena. Gabe Guertler had a pair of assists while Kameron Kielly added one.
Kyle Farrell from Jordy Stallard accounted for the Axemen’s goal with 3:22 to play in the first period. Payne tied it 20 seconds into the second and Blaisdell completed the scored with 4:19 left in the middle stanza.
Simon Hofley made 33 saves for the win while Logan Flodell stopped 30 shots in the loss.
UPEI was 1-for-2 on the power play while Acadia was 1-for-3.
UPEI improved to 10-6-2 and it in third-place, one point back of the second-place Saint Mary’s Huskies (11-7-1) with a game in hand.
The Panthers host the Huskies Saturday at 7 p.m. while the Axemen (5-11-2) travel to Fredericton, N.B., to play the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds (16-0-3) at 7 p.m.
