WINDSOR, N.S. — The Windsor Royals took the Spryfield Attack to the limit, forcing a Game 7 in their Junior C playoff series.
Despite high hopes heading into the final contest on March 8, the Royals lost the game 6-1.
While playing short-handed, the Royals’ Kyle Armsworthy got the team on the scoreboard mid-way through the first period. The Attack added two goals to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
The Attack scored twice more in the second, and then followed that up with two more in the third to earn the right to advance to the Nova Scotia Regional Junior Hockey League championships. Fighting for the Nova Scotia Junior C hockey title will be the Attack and the Eastern Shore Thunder.
In a letter issued to players and fans by the Windsor Royals following the Friday night loss, the club described the playoffs as “a hard-fought series” and indicated how proud they were of the team’s effort all season.
“The Royals took this first-place team to seven exciting games after trailing in the series 3-1,” the letter reads.
“We couldn’t have been more proud of these players to represent our team. As our season comes to a close, we thank all the fans that came out to support the Windsor Royals each night, home and on the road, or supported us during our fundraising efforts and we hope to see you all next season.”
Well wishes went to the team’s four over-age players: Armsworthy, Justin MacLellan, Alexander Carr and Alex Kelly.
Leading up to the Game 7 showdown, head coach Mike LaPierre praised the team’s effort.
“I was really impressed and proud of the guys, how they came together as a team. Nobody was complaining about ice time. Whoever was going out next, it just didn’t matter as long as they got the job done,” said LaPierre of the back-to-back wins the Royals pulled off March 2-3.
They recorded scores of 4-3 (in double overtime) and 5-1.
