CANAAN, NS - It was a family event aimed at showcasing the Annapolis Valley Shooting Sports Club (AVSSC) facilities and shooting sports in general.
The AVSSC held its Family Day at its Canaan facility on June 9, drawing 270 people. The AVSSC serves all five shooting sports disciplines: archery, black powder and cowboy action, handgun, rifle and shotgun as well as the many subsections of these disciplines.

“It allows people who may not have ever had an opportunity to try the shooting sports the chance to do just that,” AVSSC president John Robinson said. “Men, women and children all had at their disposal the chance to try shooting for themselves and see what the AVSSC offers, everything from memberships to junior programs in both archery and 22 rifle.”

He said many of the participants had never handled firearms or bows and arrows before but were shown safe handling procedures before being allowed to shoot. As always, safety was and must be the top priority whenever anyone, either a first time shooter or seasoned veteran, handles any shooting equipment.

The AVSSC holds three public events each year, two Ladies Day events which are for women only and its biggest event, Family Day. Family Day is held on the second Saturday of June every year. One Ladies Day is held in the spring and one in the fall.

The club’s next public event is “Ladies Day @ AVSSC” on Sept. 15. Robinson said they would be asking the women participating in this event to bring up a non-perishable food item for the food bank.
