LAWRENCETOWN, N.S. — It was everything Scottish at the annual Lawrencetown Education Centre’s Highland Games Sept. 21 at Beavercreek Winery. From the homemade oat cakes to tossing the caber, the event reflected what students have learned in their Gaelic Studies 11 class.
The student-organized and facilitated all-day highland gathering saw highland games heavy events competition throughout the day with athletes from around the Valley and from as far away as New Brunswick taking part.
There was a Gaelic writing tent where students like Hayden McMab showed visitors how to write their name in runes, a tent where Lexie Key and classmates demonstrated how to fold and wear a mountain kilt, and a table where Paul Lalonde and colleagues had lots of information on Gaelic.
The evening before the big event, LEC held a female throwing clinic with three of Canada’s top women highland games competitors – Adena Robinson, Liz MacDonald, and Suzie Lajoie.
LEC is a small school in the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education. The school provides experiential learning opportunities for youth who, for a variety of reasons, aren’t able to be successful in traditional school settings or with traditional methods of curriculum delivery.
