NEWPORT, N.S. — The Avon River Rollers is doing their part to help the GFL Newport Recreation Centre get wifi installed.
The roller derby league skates out of the facility during the summer months and recently held a disco derby, where part of the proceeds was donated to the arena’s wifi campaign.
“We’re hoping to increase the wifi and we’re also trying to draw more attention to the wonderful sport of roller derby here in Windsor,” said Kate Forsyth (a.k.a. Bob Loblaw), who was busy welcoming people to the disco derby fundraiser on July 28.
The Rebel Belles, the main team that skates under the Avon River Rollers banner, helped people get their derby legs under them while boogieing to the tunes of the 1980s.
“It’s fun seeing everyone come in with their costumes and music from way back when I was a youngster. Everyone out there on skates is having a good time,” she said.
Forsyth said the turnout was great for the fundraiser, as has the support the club has received since it was launched about a year ago.
She said the disco derby event not only helped raise funds for wifi at the arena but drew more awareness to the organization. The Avon River Rollers have a learn to skate ‘intake’ night coming up on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hants County War Memorial Community Centre in Windsor. All skill levels are welcome to attend.
Forsyth said while the club is always looking for new skaters, it especially needs referees and non-skating officials to sign up.
