WINDSOR, N.S. – The Windsor Karate Club had a record number of competitors take part in the National Karate Championships.
David Griffin, head instructor at the Windsor Karate Club said he was thrilled with the club’s performance.
“The Championships are now over, and we are proud and happy to say we have a medal finish from our club,” Griffin said.
Roland Smith from Windsor fought six matches, winning four of them, in the senior men’s 84+ Kg to finish with a bronze medal.
Griffin said Roland has been training at the Windsor Karate Club for approximately 14 years, this being his first medal at a national tournament.
“He was quite ecstatic about it, quite happy,” he said. “We were all thrilled as well.”
The Windsor Karate Club had seven members in Team Nova Scotia’s 33-athlete roster.
Smith said Hants County has always punched above its weight, pun intended.
“We didn’t get any other medals during the competition, but they are younger,” he said. “We did have some place in the top eight, so once they get a little more experience, get a bit more accustomed to national level competitions, we’ll have a lot more higher-level finishes.”
The championships took place at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax from March 9 – 11, with over 500 athletes participating from across the country.
