KINGS COUNTY, NS - Two Valley Thunder Lacrosse athletes, coaches and referees are making their mark as first-year – and first-time - field lacrosse players in the five-team Maritime University Field Lacrosse League.

Both West Kings graduates in June, first-year Mount Allison University aviation student Cameron Jackman and Bryce Oliver, a first-year engineering student at the University of New Brunswick – Fredericton, have taken their box lacrosse training into a crossover game.

VTL’s peewee coach, Jackman, contributed two of the Mount A Mounties’ four goals in their second game of the season Sept. 9 against the St. Mary’s Huskies. He scored again in a Sept.19 match against the University of New Brunswick Reds, earning him three season points to date to sit fourth in his team’s players’ points standings. He plays attack in the forward position. The Mounties are next on the field on Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. at Huskies Stadium in Halifax, versus the St. Mary’s Huskies.

Jackman played seven seasons with VTL to the midget level, intermediate with the St. Margaret’s Bay Storm and was drafted by the East Coast Junior Lacrosse League’s Sackville Wolves as an offensive player in 2018. He scored his first ECJLL goal July 12 in Game 2 of first-round playoffs.

As a Valley Thunder coach, Jackman has helped with the club’s novices and, this season, was head coach for the 2018 VTL peewee team, taking them to a 7-1 season league record and a second-place finish in the four-team Nova Scotia Northern division. The team also competed in the Apple Cup and the Lacrosse Nova Scotia Peewee provincial event in June.

Oliver, in the mid-field position with the UNB Reds, now has three games under his belt – including a brief stint on the penalty docket. The Reds are next on the field on Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. at Wickwire Field in Halifax, versus the Dalhousie Tigers.

Oliver played 10 seasons with Valley Thunder Lacrosse teams, plus several years in Cold Lake, Alta. More recently, as a Valley Thunder coach, he has helped with the club’s novices and, this season, helped the 2018 VTL peewee team. He has been a certified box lacrosse game official for the past five years, and pulls his weight reffing the home schedule of all VTL teams, including a jam-packed assignment through the 2018 Apple Cup.

Valley Thunder Lacrosse plays box lacrosse in the Kingston and Berwick rinks from April through June, with divisions for mini-yykes to midget athletes.
