WINDSOR, N.S. — In commanding fashion, the Windsor Royals blasted the Cumberland Colts 10-2 in Springhill Feb. 9 to sweep their best-of-five game series in the first round of playoffs in the Nova Scotia Regional Junior Hockey League.
The Royals had little difficulty outscoring the Colts 27-9 over the three games.
In Saturday’s win, the Royals held period leads of 3-1 and 4-2 before blowing the door wide open in the third period, scoring six unanswered goals, which included four power-play markers.
Chad Woodill and Cole Godfrey paced the Royals’ attack with three goals apiece while Justin MacLellan added a pair. Single markers were recorded by Parker Connors and Kyle Armsworthy. Cumberland turned this game into a nasty confrontation in the third period, as 145 of 179 penalty minutes came in the third.
Cumberland was assessed three five-minute major penalties, one each for spitting, charging and cross-checking. There were also two fighting majors, six game misconducts and five misconducts handed out.
Upcoming series
The Royals now must take on the Spryfield Attack, a team that’s heavily favoured to win, in a sest-of-seven NSRJHL semifinal series.
The opening games are slated for Spryfield on Feb. 15 at 8:30 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. The series will return to Windsor for Games 3 and 4 on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. and Feb. 24 at 5 p.m.
The Attack are a solid team and have won the provincial championship in three of the past five seasons. They also finished at the top of the league, point-wise, in three of the past four seasons, including this year.
In the six contests between the two teams this season, the Attack have won five games, outscoring the Royals 31-22 in the process.
