YARMOUTH, N.S. — The Yarmouth Mariners shut out the Campbellton Tigers 3-0 in Game 1 of the MHL’s Canadian Tire Cup best-of-seven-game league final.
In the first period Andrew Martell (Derrick Johnson, Noah McMullin) put the Mariners on the scoreboard at 8:28 – with the home team having several other close scoring chances, including a goal post, in the first frame.
Yarmouth’s second goal of the game came after Campbellton’s Tristan Gray stopped a shot by Zachery Bennett, which found its way onto the stick of Brent Broaders who snapped it into the Tigers’ open net at 4:22.
Shots on goal at the end of two periods were 25-13 in the Mariners’ favour.
Campbellton closed the gap on the shots in the third period, with 11 shots to the Mariners 13.
The Mariners final goal of the game came just shy of 44 seconds left on the clock when Logan Timmons batted it into the Tigers empty net on a pass from Matthew Barron.
Campbellton’s Tristan Gray – who had five shutouts in 10 playoff games leading into this series – turned away 35 of 37 Yarmouth shots during the game.
In net for the Mariners, Tyler Caseley stopped all 24 of Campbellton’s shots for the rookie goalie’s first MHL playoff shutout. Caseley was named first star of the game, with Andrew Martell named second star and Brent Broaders third star.
The game was a sellout with 1,501 in attendance.
Game 2 of this league final series will be played at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the Mariners Centre.
