Local fire departments reported a relatively busy seven-day period from Sept. 4-11.
On Sept. 4, Kentville firefighters responded to a fire on a doorstep on Dale Street. On Monday morning around 8 a.m., Kentville responded to a report of a blanket on fire in Centre Square.
On Tuesday, Kentville firefighters attended the scene of a two-vehicle MVC at the intersection of Highway 1 and Lovett Road in Coldbrook. There were minor injuries and a fluid spill to clean up, but no entrapment.
Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were called to the scene of a brush fire in the Fox Hill subdivision. At 10 p.m., firefighters responded to a single-vehicle rollover in Upper Dyke Village. Before they were done with that a call came in for a stump on fire on Justice Way in Kentville.
Then, just after midnight, Kentville responded in mutual aid to a house fire in Waterville that resulted in the death of a man in his fifties. Firefighters were on scene for most of the night.
Firefighters and equipment from Port Williams to Kingston were involved in fighting the house fire, either at the scene or standing in at adjacent fire halls. Greenwich responded to the scene and also stood in at Kentville.
On Wednesday evening, Kentville responded to a suspicious fire on the Cornwallis River dyke, on the old railway bed between New Minas and Kentville.
On Monday evening, Sept. 7, Canning firefighters responded to a report of two lost hikers in the Cape Split area.
Fire department four-wheelers were dispatched and with the use of GPS coordinates and cell phones, firefighters were able to locate the pair, who exited the woods around 9:30 p.m., uninjured except for being a bit cold.
“Not all cell phones have GPS, but these days more and more of them do,” said fire department spokesperson Scott Cruickshank. “Luckily, the Cape Split area has really good cell phone coverage.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, Canning responded to the single-vehicle rollover on Highway 341 in Upper Canard to which Kentville had originally responded.
