Two Planks and a Passion’s As You Like It was the most-nominated production of last year when the Robert Merritt Award nominations were announced last Friday.

The Shakespearean comedy received eight nominations, including outstanding production, from the Theatre Nova Scotia judges.

Two Planks and a Passion received 10 nominations, including an additional two for the fireside production of Homer’s The Iliad. They both were produced outdoors at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts near Canning.

Ken Schwartz got best directing nods for both As You Like It and The Iliad. He was also nominated for outstanding new play for his adaptation of The Iliad.

Alexis Milligan received the nod for leading female as Rosalind, while Ryan Rogerson was listed as best male supporting actor. Gary Markle was nominated for his costume work and Allen Cole is up for both outstanding musical direction and original score.

Jeremy Webb, who writes the annual Fezziwig scripts, was nominated as outstanding male actor for the many roles he played in Under Milkwood. It ran for a week last August at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville.

Berwick native Jenny Trites also got a nod for her score for a new musical called The Roaring Girl created for Vile Passeist Theatre.

The awards, which celebrate excellence in professional Nova Scotia theatre, will be presented on March 24 in Halifax.
