Two candidates have declared an interest in filling the single vacancy on the Kingston village commission.
The May 26 nomination day came and went, with incumbent Doug Beaman and newcomer Cory Lingard filing their notice to stand for the three-year term position with village clerk Greg Towne. An election will now be part of the village’s June 8 annual meeting.
Lingard, currently employed as a team leader with Michelin, threw his hat into the ring as a way to serve his community and “encourage others to be more involved in our village.” A resident of Kingston since 2002, Lingard is a member of the Kingston and District Volunteer Fire Department and has acted as its treasurer. He has a background in business management and he looks forward to bringing “energy and enthusiasm to the table as the next village ccommissioner of Kingston.” He sees communication of village business to residents and receiving “valuable feedback from each and every concerned citizen” as equally important.
“I give a lot of credit to the current and past commissioners for their hard work and look forward to the possibility of working with them in the future,” said Lingard in an email release.
Beaman has just wrapped up an interim term as commissioner, his second tenure on the commission. Retired from a career in the Canadian military, Beaman stepped in last fall to fill the void left by the mid-term departure of Commissioner Dale Clarke. After re-joining the commission, he assumed the position of vice-chairman and drawing, on his experience and involvement in the establishment of Kingston’s visitor information centre, assumed responsibility for the village’s tourism file. He has also been active with the commission as chairman of the new policy and finance committee.
Towne indicated both candidates will have a brief opportunity to speak at the AGM before the vote.
