BERWICK - A young family is homeless following a house fire March 11 in Garland, a community on the North Mountain north of Berwick.

Berwick firefighters responded to the original alarm on the Brow Mountain Road West shortly after 3 p.m., and on their arrival, found the home fully involved.

Mutual aid was automatically dispatched from Waterville and District and Aylesford and District under the regional mutual aid protocol for confirmed structure fires.

Kentville firefighters were dispatched to stand in at the Waterville and District hall, but were then diverted to the scene, and New Minas was dispatched to Waterville.

According to Berwick Deputy Chief Steve McMahon, the fire had been mostly knocked down by 4:15 p.m., but the structure was pretty much a total loss.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but the understanding was that the owners are "a young family." There were no injuries as a result.

Firefighters had not determined a cause for the fire, but McMahon confirmed an investigation would be carried out.

"Unless we're able to determine a clear cause, the Fire Marshal will investigate," he said, adding, "we've already been in contact."
