Hot dog, check out Pete’s wheels!

Pete Campbell is ready for shade and shelter in his new vending wagon in Berwick.

For eight years, he has operated pete’s Bun ‘n Run in the parking lot of the town’s Home Hardware, selling sausages and hotdogs in all kinds of weather. he’s also packed and unpacked daily his stand, BBQ, coolers, umbrellas, signs, handwashing stations, propane, waste containers - and more.

“I put up a sign for my summer vacation, ‘Gone fishin’, and this is what I did on my holidays,” Campbell says, explaining a recent three-week absence.

His new set-up is now on wheels, meaning he can take the entire stand home - or anywhere - without packing and unpacking his equipment. There’s a roof over his BBQ, and a lockable compartment - with windows - for storage.

“Really, it’s all about being cleaner,” Campbell says. “Everything is now up off the ground, and it goes home with me every night to be sanitized.”

Campbell credits the support of Berwick-area BBQ lovers for the “renovation.” He invites visitors, and suggests any tips go in the jar for the Berwick fire department.

Still diggin’

Kerrigan Weihers may have been minding the shop the last few weeks at the new Fox Mountain Garage in Morristown, but he wants to reassure those who know him for his excavating work he’s back in the field.

The store, gas pumps and garage opened in mid-July, and Weihers was “back and forth” between getting the business off the ground and excavating contract work. His family and company workers handled a greated load during the period; now, he’s out from behind the counter and back in the cab.

“I’m not retired from the excavating!”

Breakfast with a bang

Each month, 40,000 Nova Scotians need help with something most of us take for granted: having a full belly.

Cora’s Breakfast and Lunch is challenging restaurants throughout Nova Scotia to help address this problem. Starting today and running until September 30, Cora’s is running the Hunger Relief Restaurant Challenge to raise money to help FEED NOVA SCOTIA. Customers at Cora’s and other participating restaurants will be asked to purchase a truck for $2. Every twoonie will ship $28 worth of food to a family in need. Additional donations are also welcome.

Each year, FEED NOVA SCOTIA sorts and distributes almost two million kilograms of food. Donations help offset the costs of collecting, warehousing and distributing food.

The challenge isn’t about which restaurant can raise the most money. Rather, it’s about stepping up to make a difference. Restaurants can set their own fundraising goals and are invited to contact Cora’s for details and promotional support. Each week, Cora’s plans to send an update to media on which restaurants are involved. The restaurant will also send an announcement of how much money has been raised in early October.

All six Nova Scotia locations — including New Minas — are taking part in the Hunger Relief Restaurant Challenge, and hope to raise $18,000 among them.
