“Pick it up. Make things happen!”

The catchphrase of Mary Jane Copps, otherwise known as The Phone Lady, has turned out to be prophetic for the Valley Women’s Business Network (VBWN)

Copps will be guest speaker at the 12th annual fundraiser on Oct. 2 at the Al Whittle Theatre, Wolfville.

In 2013, Copps was recognized as an expert and thought leader in telephone communication by The Wall Street Journal, CBC business reports and Progress Magazine. She is president of the board for the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Network of Nova Scotia and a member of the Canadian Professional Speakers Association.

Using humour, energy and sparkle, Rachel Cooper said, Copps targets the texting generation and anyone else who shies away from picking up the phone and speaking to clients or prospects. She even shows people who are confident on the phone how to get better results.

With the event weeks away and sponsorship money still coming in, Cooper said, the fundraiser is turning into a record-breaking event for VWBN. Proceeds of the fundraiser go toward bursaries for graduating women at Nova Scotia Community College Kingstec campus, support for Valley businesswomen through workshops and seminars and support for businesswomen in developing countries through Kiva (www.kiva.org).

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start. The evening will include refreshments, gift bags for the first 100 guests to arrive, a silent auction, and plenty of networking.

Tickets are going fast, Cooper said. They are $25 ($15 for students) and can be purchased from Careforce in Kentville (946 Park Street), Kimball Brogan Law Office in Wolfville (121 Front Street), and Kings Physiotherapy Clinic in New Minas (28 Kentucky Court). Both men and women are welcome, Cooper added.

The mission of the VWBN is to support, educate and promote women in business in the Annapolis Valley. Monthly meetings present speakers on business and personal development.
