More than a decade since Acadia had a baseball team, the Wolfville university will have a club in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association this fall.
Mike Reid, one of three Axemen coaches, confirmed Aug. 26 that Acadia would be joining the Atlantic conference, which also includes UNB, Holland College, Cape Breton, St. F.X., Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie.
Reid, Jason Pleasant Sampson and Chris Burns will coach the team. Reid and Pleasant Sampson co-coached the Hantsport juniors this summer, while Burns coached the Tri-County juniors.
One Tri-County player and Acadia student, David Pilat, “really got the ball rolling,” Reid said.
Ian Mosher, who coached the Axemen the last time Acadia played in the university league, is involved in the background, Reid said.
The team was scheduled to hold tryouts Sept. 1 starting at 1 p.m. at Kentville’s Memorial Park.
“We’re told there will be between 50-70 players trying out,” Reid said.
Acadia will play an 18-game regular season, made up of nine doubleheaders, with games scheduled for both Kentville and Hantsport.
Acadia’s first game will be Sept. 7 in Cape Breton, with the home opener a Sept. 13 doubleheader - 1 and 4 p.m. - in Kentville against Holland College.
“We’re not a varsity team, we’re a club team, so we’re responsible for our own fundraising,” Reid added. “We’re all pretty excited, and looking forward to getting going.”
Fans of the Kentville and Hantsport junior teams will be familiar with at some of the confirmed players, including Jeff Longaphy, Wes Harding and Nick Tibert, all of the Kentville juniors, and Andrew Chase from the Hantsport squad.
