WINDSOR, N.S. - Windsor Knights player/manager Jason Hanes said, “it was far from easy but still absolutely delighted,” after the Windsor Knights won the 2018 Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League Championship on Aug. 26.
In a marathon championship game, the Knights squeezed out a 14 inning 3-2 win over the Sherose Island Schooners.
Derek Hart doubled for the Knights in the bottom of the 14th and Paul Humphreys delivered a game winning RBI single to provide the Knights with their win and the 2018 Championship.
After throwing a 2 hi 3-0 win over the Schooners in an earlier tournament game Dave Swindall pitched five innings to start the championship, but Humphreys relieved him in the sixth and threw the final eight innings to earn the win in relief.
“Our youth movement provided great dividends in 2018 after some bumps and bruises the past couple of seasons,” Hanes said. “To see the Knights on top after seeing Hantsport and Noel road being the dominant teams over the past 10 years or so was a special feeling.”
The Knights lost only once all weekend and that came against Sherose Island by a score of 3-0. Their other win came against the Pictou County Royals and saw Alex Sabean throw a two-hitter in a 2-1 win.
Noel Road was the only other Hants County team to make this year’s playoffs and they recorded a win and two losses. The win was a 5-4 verdict over Pictou and the two losses came against the Schooners by scores of 5-1 and 2-1.
Upcoming tournament
The Knights and Noel Road Jays are playing for the Nova Scotia Intermediate Triple AAA Baseball Championship in Halifax Labour Day weekend.
The Knights start at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon against Spryfield while the Jays play Eastern Passage at 6 p.m.
The Knights play a pair of games Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against Hammonds Plains and 4:30 p.m. against Eastern Passage while the Jays play at 9 a.m. against Spryfield and 7 p.m. against Hammonds Plains.
