This year’s Football Canada Cup (FCC) was held on Raymond Field and Team Nova Scotia came sixth. They lost to Team B.C. 10 – 24.
Quarterback Caleb Melanson, who plays for the Horton Griffins, was selected as offensive player of the game.
The provincial sustained several injuries to key players during the championships.
Acadia’s coach Jeff Cummins noted that Team Nova Scotia “showed very well in their first two games, but wore down. They did their job well.”
The final game between Quebec and Saskatchewan was a nail biter. Quebec won for the third year in a row, but it came down to the final 11 seconds.
Gary Linthorne, president of Football Nova Scotia, noted that the Under 16 Atlantic Bowl is coming up next. It will involve two Nova Scotia teams (Blue and White), along with New Brunswick and PEI.
The first game is set for Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. and features the two provincial team battling each other. The tournament, said Linthorne, will be played 12 astride.
At 4:30 p.m. the other two teams will face off and the final game July 16 will feature N.S. Blue and PEI. Play continues on Tuesday with the N.S. Whites playing New Brunswick at 10 a.m. Further games are set for 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Linthorne described each match as a mini game with two 12-minute halves.
Opening ceremonies for the Under 16 Challenge take place at 7 p.m. on July 18, but the first game in that series is slated for 4 p.m. when Ontario faces Saskatchewan.
At 7:30 p.m. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia will be playing each other. Linthorne says next Wednesday and Thursday will serve as practise days with the medal contention happening on Friday.
