“We had a lot of highs and lows in the game but its always nice to come out with a win,” said head coach Larry Priestnall.

CK’s special teams played well, he said, with Geoff Mullin’s returning two kicks for touchdowns, although one was called back on a penalty.

“Our running game showed great improvement this week, with newcomer Colton Balsor picking up 106 yards on 12 carries and Connor Ross having 87 yards on four carries, with a 57-yard run on a quarterback keeper,” Priestnall said.

Ross also threw 287 yards, with Mullin catching three balls for 115 yards and receiver Eric Holliefield making eight catches for 126 yards.

The CK defence got a boost with veteran player Chet Winters’ return, and he had an immediate impact on the game, Priestnall said. Winters had two interceptions, leading the defence, while Ross, Trayve Jarvis and Dawson Parker also making interceptions.

“Darrien McBride also had another strong game for us at defensive tackle,” he said.

Touchdowns were scored by Mullins – who also kicked a field goal – and Holliefield also had a touchdown.

This week, Central Kings has a bye week, which was welcome news to Priestnall.

“We have a few players that could use the rest to heal up,” he said.

Loss for Horton

Horton hosted Cobequid Education Centre from Truro in NSSAF Division 1 high school football action Sept. 18 on the turf at Acadia.

Luke Oulton caught a touchdown pass for the Griffins to open the scoring, but CEC responded to lead 7-6 early in the second quarter and hung on to win the game 20-12.

According to head coach Steve Melanson, Alex Hayes led the offence for Horton.

“Grade 10 student Alex Hayes stepped in for an injured Caleb Melanson and threw two touchdown passes,” Melanson said. “Our offence continues to struggle, but it’s early in the year.”

Horton will travel to Bedford Sept. 24 for a 7 p.m. game, the first time it has met Charles P. Allen High School this year.

“We need to go back to basics, we have to play smart football and not turn the ball over,” he said. “We have a lot of veterans on defence and I’ve challenged them this week, we need them to carry the team a bit more. We need to be better on defence and better on special teams.”

West Kings also had a win, defeating John H. Gillis of Antigonish 9-6 on Sept. 20.
